Subject: Trimble Handheld Greenseeker experience

Vauxhall, Alberta, Canada
I tried out the new handheld that they had out this year. I didn't get it in time to put in high nitrogen check strips so it was more just taking numbers and tracking through the year. I take petioles (tissue samples) weekly through late June to early August on potatoes. Petioles measure what the crop is taking up and the Greenseeker (as far as I understand it) measures what the crop has produced (i.e. vegetative growth) and how healthy it is.

One field was low in nitrogen and both petioles & Greenseeker picked up on it. Its hard to tell from just one year but I think if I have check strips it'll make it more useful. What I liked about it was that its instant read and can be used anywhere in the field whereas petiole sampling requires time and waiting to hear back from the lab. One thing I noticed was it starting showing lower numbers as the crop senesced and it was fairly consistant across fields with time to top-kill.
