Jesup, IA | Drove from Des Moines to Waterloo this afternoon. Did my own little crop tour. There is still plenty of corn that just has blisters, not kernels. The beans look like they are packing it in on blooming. Many observations with >20 pods per plant.
This was the most advanced maturity and highest yield potential sample I saw on the way home. It was taken in Grundy County, IA (land doesn't get any better than this) between Beaman and Grundy Center. Crops were green here (unlike Ames and Des Moines where it is dry).
For you forecasters, what kind of crop will we get from 32k ears/acre, 16 around and averaging 34 kernels long? Just settling into milk stage on Aug 13? Remember, this is the most mature, and best, sample observed?
Beans had 26 flat pods and had ceased blooming. Early variety? Beautiful from the road, but barely knee high in the field.
Guesses? Yield estimates? Again, this is the loin cut of Iowa. It doesn't get better than this.
