sj3788 - 8/11/2013 10:29 Have been spreading 11-52-0 in late winter early spring and running 5 gal/ac. of 10-34-0 through planter. Have some lower P soil tests so the reason for running through planter. But wondering if I can just spread it all in the fall and just run 28 through planter in spring. This is all notill, mainly rented ground. Is just spreading P working for notillers? Been notilling some of this ground for a good many years, just hard to get P levels up to where they should be on this type of ground. Any thoughts, fall isn't very far away. Thanks. From your post it sounds like you are running 5 gal/a of 10-34-0 IN FURROW on the planter. You can not put 28% in furrow with the planter. If you have 2x2 coulters capability with the planter, that is "banding" and I would up the 10-34-0 from 5 gal. Maybe move the coulters to 3" from the seed and blend some 28 in with more 10-34-0. In soils that tie up P, banding is especially effective since the concentration of P in the band is very high (compared to broadcast P) if the same amount of total P is applied. The high concentration of P in and near the band maens the adjacent soil can "tie up" some P to saturation but there will be P left over for the plant. Whereas if the same amount of P is broadcast, the concentration in any one spot is lower and more can be tied up with less available for the plant. In those soils the thing to do is to band the P either with the planter or with strip till and plant over or near it. Good reference material above in this thread. Thank you. Jim at Dawn
