Kingston,Mi
Either the Alberta or Saskatchewan Ag. universities did swath grazing using oats that had headed but were not filled. They attempt to time this just before a killing frost. The unripe oats are swathed then fed using a poly wire to control access, I was at a Society for Rangeland Management meeting in Rapid City, South Dakota and attended a presentation on this method of stockpiling grazing (I had previously attended the grazing school in Linn Missouri where the other popular stockpiling option was presented, leave it standing and fenced away from the livestock). Presenter explained how they used a battery powered drill with an electricians 18 in drill bit (takes the bending over in insulated coveralls out of the equation) to drill holes to move the fence post ahead. They also did not provide water for the cow herd instead letting them eat snow.
