I don't think its a puff ball. Puff balls, at least around here are always whitish, and if you cut them open before they mature they have an almost mushroom consistency, no 'jelly'. Once they mature and dry up they will turn brownish, but like you say they explode into a cloud of dust/spores if kick them or throw them on the ground.
