That is one of the major problems if you purchase hay - with swings in prices you never know for sure what the price of 6 months of feed will be! Right now good hay is in the $150/t range if you can find any. Cattle, especially cow/calf, are a longer term production cycle. Hay prices on the other hand can vary enormously over short periods of time. And trucking hay from any distance is very costly. Buying truckloads from a distance may make sense for a dairy but not for a cow/calf operation. Cow/calf is pretty much tied to the local hay market. Conclusion I came to is that I need to produce most if not all of my own and have the ability to store it longer term without losing too much quality. Your numbers confirm that. Jim
