I suppose every area is different. Here, with the price of hay and alfalfa, I think anyone that tore it up was simply nuts. Almost $300 ton alf in bales, really... I just contracted a bunch of corn stalk bales for a ridiculous amount. I think a lot of people are underestimating the value of feed.
