Jesup, IA | This is the view out of my shop window. I farm in a great spot in Iowa that usually is well on the high side of the state average. Some of this field tassled and going to push the needle hard on the yield monitor. Some of it ten days away from pollinating. A little of it in front replanted and not much more than waist high. Will it contribute anything to the field's yield?
While the cool temps this week, and in the forecast, make this crop breath easier, this crop clearly needs more steam (heat and water) to get it to where it needs to be.
More than likely, harvest is going to be late, the grain will be light test weight, and it will be wet. From the air, this field is pretty representative of an area of Iowa about the size of the production area of Indiana. This field's yield will probably beat last year's drought harvest, but be substantially below my APH.
While the bears have won this week (and with new crop, just about a year now), just a reminder that this crop is not in the bin yet.
