Trash in the seed zone is a concern. I learned to not run more than 2-3 inches deep and let the row cleaners clear a path. Stalks mixed with seed is not a good combination.
As far as pushing the stalks into the ground instead of cutting them. That sounds like a real compaction problem to me.
