Vacuum bleeding works well on some systems, but you can also really screw up a porportioning valve vacuum bleeding, if you don't know the system.
I've used hospital vacuum pumps to do bleeding on brake systems for years, and they work well. The little hand pumps don't develope the suction necessary to do the job.
