SWOH | 10 years ago I would say you shouldn't be concerned if you've done everything correctly. Who knows now, I've been accused of so many ridiculous things it's almost funny. Communication, making an effort to talk to whoever is mad at me, and not being a hot head goes a long way in my experience.
Get the well tested. And make sure your spray records are bullet proof (and I don't mean make something up to make them bullet proof). If you approach this type of thing with the attitude that there's no way you caused the problem, then you're gonna get nailed more than likely. If you approach it like there's a possibility they're right in their assumption then everything will go a lot smoother. But you won't know anything if you don't get the well tested. Don't guess anything.
How did the doctor determine the cancer came from ag chemicals?
I wouldn't get too worked up about it based on something the neighbors said...go talk to these people directly. If you don't talk to them it will look like you are avoiding them and make you automatically look guilty, if you confront them about it and show some interest in what's going on, it might solve a lot of issues. Tell them you don't think you caused the problem but you'd like to help them find out for sure. Being civil and non hostile can make a world of difference.
Applying "label recommendations" is more than just not going over the rate, if you had set back restrictions on something that you didn't follow they'll still make a case out of it.
Is this an open well or does it have a casing?
Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying lay over and let them walk all over you. But be civil about the whole thing and don't be a jerk and don't make it look you're trying to hide something. Be honest about everything. Don't give anybody any reason to make you look like the bad guy.
And get the well straightened out and up to snuff like it should be so it's not a problem in the future.
From what you're describing it all smells pretty fishy. Keep your head about the whole thing and communicate directly with these people, don't go through the gossip chain of the neighbors. Maybe they aren't even considering the well and think it's a drift issue. Go tell them the guy in the sprayer thought they were video taping him and causally ask them if there's a problem. Right now it sounds like they think you're the bad guy and nothing will change their mind if you don't talk to them. Talk to them very carefully though.
