Never hurts in such a situation to point out that weed and feed fertilizer causes similar effects to many plants as well. I've run into it before where the homeowner complains they are being drifted upon while the real problem, especially with some fruit trees is the chemicals they are liberally dosing on their own lawn.

Kind of like when the golfcourses killed trees all over the country a couple of years ago applying a weed killer to their grass.
