The assumption you mentioned in your method is important. It says that the tractor operator disengages the clutch when the slack comes out of the rope. In other words, the engine puts no additional energy into the rope once the stretching process starts. I know of no one who does that, so the method will generally underestimate the max rope tension.
Back when nylon ropes first came out (we bought our first, and last, one in the late 1960's), they seemed like the real deal. I used to enjoy watching people's eyes get big the first time they saw one in use. Once I reflected on the energy storage/safety aspect, we retired it to a corner of the shop. When a neighbor lost his life to one, we dug ours out and burned it.
