I doubt if the shank of the bigger ball will go in your hitch.  If it does I would think you need to extend the goose neck to as long as possible for fender clearence.  i assume you are talking a heavy well mounted hitch and the trailer is unloaded.  As with anything a bit of caution while traveling goes along ways.  Ben
