Gary Edwards Anamosa, Iowa | I wouldn't loose too much sleep over not having crop insurance. There are a lot of farmers in Iowa who do not have any crop insurance. This past year with the worst drought in Iowa history very few farmers collected insurance money much beyond their premiums. At least not enough to offset the value of that rye crop to you. I have never heard of a corn silage crop failing so really the only thing you might be missing out on is some of that free silage Mark talked about. So concentrate on getting the rye chopped and your silage corn planted. Who knows it may be your best corn. I know of some dairies that routinely take a crop of alfalfa Memorial day week and plant silage corn and some years end up harvesting that corn and chopping poorer corn.
