| Starlink corn was "different." Developed by Aventis (now Bayer), it was approved for sale with the stipulation that it not enter the human food chain. The Bt protein in the variety was known to be less digestible than the one used in other Bt corns. Aventis had no workable plan to keep the variety segregated, and most of the farmers growing it were unaware of the restriction. The shtf when the corn was found in Taco Bell taco shells. This led to the varieties registration being withdrawn, and the corn has never been grown or sold since. The reported number of allergic reaction cases was 28, at last count. As I recall, there were a number of lawsuits, but probably amounted to chump change for Aventis. And to your first point, there are some who think that the rapid acceptance of gmo crops by farmers was not a well thought out decision. Given the resistance issues we are now facing, there may even be a few farmers in that group. |
