| Stupid me, if they designed the bridge so that a single truck can take a whole section down, obviously they are smart enough to ensure the next section is damaged too! ;) The bridge piles are pretty thin. Very elegant architecturally I'm sure, but each section has just a few inches to rest on top, and barely if any buffer between 2 sections, so if one section is hit, it will push on the other section too.
Yeah, I can see the span is arched, so obviously trucks should drive on the center lanes, but there should still be a fake span to take the hit well ahead of the bridge. I don't remember if there was one, and didn't see any in the news pictures either, but there wouldn't have been any such accident if there was one.
They'll probably have to redirect traffic all the way down south of Mt Vernon to Highway 99. Hope you won't be impacted too much. | |
