Gary, not picking on you at all. I just get wound up that any of us end up making ag decisions based on government programs. I am not against all government programs, some of them are very necessary. Should a producer take advantage of programs that are offered to him? Might as well. A friend was nearly wiped out years ago by a hail storm that took out most of a potentially beautiful corn crop. He did not have hail insurance. He could have used that protection of hail insurance. Crop insurance was probably intended as a safety net. Unfortunately it has been distorted to where it is fueling many actions rather than protecting them. For one thing, not all crops are treated equally. A complex subject. Nothing personal. I just don't like the idea that crop insurance has any place in ag decision making. And many of the folks benefitting from the current insurance program are also very vocal critics of government programs. If all crops were treated equally and if the price of crop insurance reflected the actual cost of providing it, I might feel differently. Jim at Dawn
