Tensas, Louisiana | Actually before this region was populated they were even more plentiful. The people shot them on sight for about a hundred years and pretty much had them thinned out much like the black bear. Tight harvest restrictions along with the fact that commercial gator farmers come out to raid the nests for eggs and then are required by law to re-introduce a certain percentage to native habitat have made populations skyrocket over the last 15 years or so. In the wild most gator hatchlings are eaten by other fish and reptiles including larger gators. | |
