Subject: tilled ground, wheel ground drive

Oswald No-Till Farm Cleghorn, IA
Greetings,

I have been the planter operator on our farm for 30 seasons this year. I am still learning.

I know that on firm surface no-till strip till the planter sprocket to drop ratio is different than on tilled ground. How soft the tilled ground is can make a big difference. I have a map from a custom planting field that was tilled. The first couple diagonal passes with the tillage tool weren't acceptable for the owner who then set it in deeper. Where my ground driven planter crossed the more firm (shallow tilled) section, the planting population map is higher.

Before I point fingers at seed counts on the bags to any great degree, I would look at planter performance while cautioning about messing with sprockets too much.... coming from someone who has messed with his share of sprockets over the course of 30 seasons.

Best of luck,
