You better define "hand over fist". Here is a link to ISU's livestock profitability page, go to the 1974-1990 xls file and look at it. There are an awful lot of red months there, even in the glory days of the 80's you are referring to. I don't have time now to take that spreadsheet and make some averages, maybe tonight I will, but quick perusal looks to me like it was no gravy train.

The train wreck in the late 90's was born in the mid 90's, prompted by structural changes in the hog industry, not your supposed "free grain" in the mid 80's.
