Perry County, 35 miles NW of Harrisburg, PA | Hanna,
I see you are located in Central PA. Maybe this will be of some help.
There are no definite answers in our fight against slugs. But . . some us here in your area are learning how to manage slugs and the damage they cause. Those I am referring to are located in Union County, York County and myself in Perry County.
We are finding that planting into green living cover crops does help minimize the damage done to the following corn and soybeans. As Brian SEPA noted, the green cover crops give the slugs food while the corn is trying to grow. It sort of makes sense, that when burndown is applied ahead of planting and everything is brown and crispy, as the green corn is coming up, the corn is the only available food source for to attract the slugs. We have effectivly said, here you go slugs, come and get it!
I am sure that if any of the other growers that I referred to above are located near you, that they would be more and happy to share their personnel experiences with you. I can see that you get their names if you want.
In conservations with Dr. John Tooker, from Penn State, there is another approach that I am taking to help combat slugs, but at this time I have no hard data to support my thoughts.
I hope this helps.
Dave
