Eastern Iowa | Don't really know why you're busting the balls of livestock producers. They were adding value to their grain long before it was cool. Besides, we're still your best customer--even better than ethanol.
I have absolutely no problem with ethanol, it is a far better response to low prices than government LDP handouts were. But it's a PR problem for the industry when its growth is dependent upon going hat in hand to the Congress every few years and having them mandate increased use. It makes no sense to be getting pissed at voters for opposing mandates that benefit you while costing them and their families money. And you don't know where the friction comes from?
The corn growers would have been far smarter to endorse from the beginning a bottom up strategy of consumer choice--endorsing a flexible fuel standard for new cars and low interest loans for building retail access instead of allowing their product to be primarily a fuel additive while also being made out to be the bad guy by petro interests. Had that happened ten years ago, E85 might have more than 50% market share in the upper midwest for all fuel sold, and we wouldn't even be talking about needing to mandate anything.
