NW Washington
There are lots of 455 drills being pulled by tractors with open center systems. Just get the open center package from JD and be done with it. Drills have been used without "active downpressure" for a about a hundred years till John Deere came up with this system that has caused way more heartburn and hydraulic problems then a grain drill really should. Just down the page are pictures of one being pull by a Versatile.

I think you will have to pay attention to the downpressure and maybe hit the hydraulics once in a while to maintain pressure, especially if go around the field and don't raise and lower the drill very often.
