Heil Harvesting, Ulysses KS/Limon CO | Head is a 963 MacDon, it is center and left hand delivery only. We also have a 972 that delivers left, right and center. Center delivery is only into the feeder house on a combine, but windrows out the center on a swather.
We stop everything we can on the machine. Basically all we are running is the feederhouse with the chain removed.
I did quite a bit of failed corn last summer, worked good, 14 rows at 8-9 mph gets things done. Also, the guys with crimpers lost a lot of feed value vs. the draper. The cob gets chopped up in the crimper, shelling some corn that never makes it into the bale. Also, because of the small windrow they were forced to rake it, and lost many of the cob pieces with kernals attached as well as the loose corn prior to baling. I worked for several people who parked their own swathers when they saw the difference. I would sure try to get my hands on a draper for windrowing corn. Biggest draw back is drying time is increased significantly. If you turned the draper windrows it would sure help on drying. Where I was humidity was low and heat was plentiful so very few guys turned the windrows.
This corn varied from 2 to 5 feet tall, low populations, 13 to 17000.
Edit: this stuff was some of the poorer I did, 3' tall or so. Can't find pictures of the better stuff on this computer...
