Kentucky | Booman41 - 5/11/2013 05:20 Now that I know the ryegrass is in this field I will probably keep wheat out of it next fall after corn as well. What herbicide could I use to control it? I will definitely do a better job scouting next year for this.
For control in corn, I use glyphosate -- 24-32 oz. of PowerMax. In wheat Axial XL has worked well even on larger Italian ryegrass sprayed in March. Osprey is labelled but has issues for crop safety when applied within 2 weeks either way of 28% so I don't use it in the spring. Olympus Flex is a possibility in the fall and I would like to try some one of these falls when it isn't too cold or wet.
I no-till wheat so the glyphosate plus Valor SX burndown in the fall has done a good job on emerged ryegrass. Most years the ryegrass will be coming up by the time I spray the burndown the first week of October. I wouldn't be afraid to raise wheat in your case. I was just trying to communicate that controlling Italian ryegrass must be a high priority. A 2-2.5 oz. rate of Sencor isn't bad in the fall if you can catch the ryegrass before it tillers. It will also control henbit and chickweed that are emerging, but the wheat must be a variety with metribuzin tolerance. Sometimes the burndown followed by the fall spray is enough to make the spring applications not necessary. You can also throw in some generic Warrior with the Sencor to control aphids and prevent a fall infection of Barley Yellow Dwarf.
