To the OP, I would play by the rules but you said you need feed. We can't see how good or poor it is to make a decision for you. We just don't know your situation.
The only thing I have big enough to chop was planted the last day of September and it is over knee high and thick. The size goes down from that planting date on.
Sounds like you kill it and find other feed but I don't know.
