Jim, this doesn't directly address your question, but a previous sprayer we owned gave us more trouble in this regard.  We ended up actually weighing it, adding water to whatever mark on the tank, and weighing again.  I don't remember specific numbers as this was something like ten years ago, but I do remember the gauge marks on the tank being incorrect vs. what the actually gallons by weight were.
