Using internal power plug and plugged into one of the empty SATA sockets (that I thought were maybe blanks) and it cloned like magic like it was supposed to.  Exact duplicate of clean install I  previously made. Swapped it in and everything is exactly the same.

For some reason the external adapter that plugged in via USB  that I was using to provide the power and SATA connection was not allowing the clone to work. 

I sure do appreciate everyone's help and ideas on answering my questions and walking me through this long process. I feel confident in my abilities now to know how this is done and could easily swap out a drive and be back up in minutes.
