Acutally the pure ammonium nitrate is HARDER to decompose/detonate than when it has certain impurities or mixtures like fuel oil/hydrocarbons.

I spent some time today reading the EPA investigation of the Terra Nitrogen plant explosion in 1994, A big download, but lots of information about the possible risk factors that might have resulted in that disaster. I think their conclusion was that the most likely causes in that case were excessive heat and very acidic ph in the neturalizer/reactor which was shut down but left full of AN because another part of the plant was down.
