Thunder Bay, Ontario, Great White North | Haven't really thought about giving up on corn - we grow really early varieties (75-79 day), and it would have to get pretty late for them to not make at least somewhat useable silage 'here'. 4-5 years ago I had to replant half a field that was destroyed by geese, June 6, it still made decent silage. Problem is if we get out into June it really is too late for a decent barley crop, that is pretty much the best alternative for corn around here.
We usually plant corn after May 15 anyways, sometimes last week of May, always had a crop. Things will hopefully change weather wise soon and we will get dried out.
What about you Tim? What is your cutoff date for corn and what are the alternatives? |
