Well it does take more and more space after over 3 years of updates, and sometimes at unsuspected locations too: At some stage I used to have both Microsoft and Google Earth, and both apps took about 0.5 GB each of cached maps at different resolutions in the Users folder. I uninstalled both, wiped all folders, and reinstalled only Google Earth. Some games are split on several DVDs indeed, but I don't have any of those, just a couple small games. Yet I had 110+ GB of space used in the Windows, Program Files and Users folders of my desktop computer when I decided to clean it up. I had Windows 7 Ultimate since day 1 of its release, so it explains a lot of the space use issues (updates, winsxs folder).

I don't mind partitions, it's just that today, it makes sense to use lightning fast SSD drives, but these are still too expensive (for me) to use as data or backup drives, so I use my SSD only as a system drive. Windows Backup also creates system images that are the size of the whole system partition, which also fits the smaller SSD drives. I would be OK with a terabyte drive with a 256 GB system partition (I still think 100 GB is too small for comfort) and the rest for data, but music alone takes almost 1 TB, the remaining 23 TB are mostly for movies... ;)
