southern MN | I just don't see how a cover crop campn manufacture P or K. They need to be hauled in.
Cover crops with deep roots can pull P and K from deep in the ground - if there is any - and store it up near the surface. So cover crops can make some P and K more available, but long term that would still be mining the soil?
If its renal ground you don't mind mining, or you have a certain situation with high fertility levels down deep, then I guess it works. If you want good soils 20 years from now, I really think you need to replace P and K as you haul crops away. There is no way to create P and K as you can do with N by growing a crop.
