When you turn a computer on, the BIOS is loaded by the motherboard. The BIOS is the most basic control system on the computer. It's like a very simple operating system that gets everything started.

The BIOS will do what it's set up to do. On some computers (most Dell machines I've worked with) it's programmed from the factory to look for an operating system that's installed on a hard drive. If that's the way your computer is set up, it won't find an operating system and it will tell you as much.

Here's what you do:

1. Insert 1st recovery CD/DVD into the drive
2. Restrt computer. Look for things like "F2 for BIOS" or F12 for boot menu". It's better to find the boot menu rather than the BIOS. You can change the boot menu from the BIOS, but if there is a shortcut to the boot menu, I'd use that because it's easier

3. You'll probably miss the boot menu or BIOS entry window the first time because you won't hardly have time to read the screen. Just wait and observe what it does. If it's programmed to look for a bootable CD/DVD first, it will start the process of installing Windows. If it does not look for that first, it will say no operating system found. In that case, hit CTRL+ALT+Delete and it will restart. Repeat as many times as necessary to figure out how to boot from the CD/DVD drive.

Once it boots from the DVD drive, the Dell disk will do most of the work for you. You'll have to read th questions and answer them. If you don't know the answer, leave it as the default and click next.

After the first time that you boot from the recovery disk, don't try to get to the recovery disk again after the computer restarts on its own. It will restart several times. Just let it do it's thing, you only need to boot from the recovery disk once.

If you have questions while you're in process, give me a call. You can find my number through my profile if you dig a very small amount.
