Subject: RE: Hard drive cloning Windows 7 ?

The more I read the more I think the solution is what I described to you earlier.

It sounds to me like Omar was just using Dell supplied install disks (like the ones you created) to install Windows on a new hard drive that did not have the recovery and OEM partitions that you have.

You are doing something totally different which is to clone the encrypted recovery partition, the OEM partition and the regular partition on to the new hard drive. From what I can tell, there is no imaging program that can clone the encrypted recovery partition.

My opinion is that you don't need the extra partitions anyway. You are not an average user. You take steps to prevent mild chaos when something goes wrong. I would say 99.99 percent of users do not have Acronis. You are miles ahead of nearly everyone in terms of being prepared for hardware failures.

What I'm saying is that at the very least you should back stuff up on a USB drive or whatever is most convenient, then swap hard drives, use your recovery disks that you created to install stuff on the new hard drive, then restore your data to the new hard drive with your backup. Finally, if everything is working, smoke your old hard drive with KillDisk or DBAN and then do what you wanted to do originally (although using the old hard drive as the spare rather than the new one).
