Martinsville, Ohio | Yes I am guilty of jibber jabber but not half what I read on here.
"Ed your comment "Then I inherited all of these resistant weeds that are hard to kill." has zero logic. If you have not, do not use Roundup what does it matter if you have weeds resistant to Roundup? Your choice of non Roundup weed herbicides should control them. What Roundup resistant weeds have you inherited that a conventional weed herbicide will not control? If you can't control them how is it Roundup's fault? How did you get Roundup resistant weeds in the first place and if you don't use Roundup how do you even know if you have Roundup resistant weeds?"
This farm had glyphosate resistant weeds on it and more seed came in over this nine years. Glyphosate weeds are harder to kill than non glyphosate resistant for me. I have no proof on that, just my opinion. Cover crops have done the best job controlling them for me. The weeds are partially in control and the poison hemlock, marestail and giant ragweed resistant weeds are currently under control. It took a lot more herbicide and a lot more trips to control them. This makes perfect logic to me.
"Reasons to plant GMO
1. Corn borer control I don't have corn borer and native resistance is effective
2. Corn Rootworm Control many studies show resistant corn yields more with insecticide
3. Soybean weed control that has failed here, have to tank mix enough stuff to raise non GMO like we used to
4. Soybean yield has been going down the tubes, look at the national and country averages. Don't blame it all on weather.
5. Canola weed control (grass weeds in wheat rotation) No experience there but hearing the same problems with RR canola rotations
6. Crop safety of roundup they why do those beans always turn yellow? You can pick out the RR fields now after posting, they turn yellow
7. Alfalfa weed control Let's hear you alfalfa and cotton growers!
8. Cotton weed control
9. Corn earworm control Earworm seems worse in RR corn I have scouted, at least no better here.
many more but thats a start
To test for roundup resistant weeds on the farm.
1. Spray with roundup NO, I don't want to chelate my soils anymore
2. Observe if all the weeds die They didn't, went to Liberty which will be no better in a few years, non GMO is my best alternative. Never saw any GMO 100 bu beans last year. I did see non GMO's that made that much. Many of my friends Farm averages were higher with non GMO and got the premium to boot than RR soybeans.
The logic is if you do not spray roundup you cannot perform the test for roundup resistance. You likely have roundup resistant weeds but it was a great observation. I have done this since glyphosate came out so I understand. Glyphosate will work for me again but I don't want to chelate my soils. I figure if I can't raise non GMO crops successful I am not better than any one else.
