In my opinion, the single best thing you can do to encourage reliability of home-made recovery CD's/DVD's is to buy QUALITY media. If you research it just a little you will find some sources of good media. Then burn at a speed that's significantly slower than the max speed of your drive.

I would definitely not stop using the drive that came with your computer. KillDisk is easy to use and DBAN looks good as well although I haven't used it. They are both free.

The very most I would do since your computer is close to new is I would install Windows on your new hard drive and after you know it's working I would clone it, put the old drive back in and run KillDisk or DBAN on it. Then put your clone on the old disk and you have the new one ready for when you want it.

If you don't want to go to the trouble of using Microsoft original stuff rather than the Dell recovery stuff (although it's highly recommended to go that route) I would just use the recovery media you created on the new drive rather than buying stuff from Dell. Then if it doesn't work you still have the old drive until Dell can send you their stuff or until you get better media to try agai on making good recovery media.
