Thanks Jim, You answered something that has puzzled me for while.
My experience with JD single disc openers is that once that sharp edge wears rounded on the cast iron closing wheel, it no longer crumbles the seed trench wall shut in firm no till soil, it just drags dry dust and crop residue from the surface into the seed trench.
The stock SDX closing wheel is lightweight with a rounded plastic/rubber tire that I suspected would work no better than a worn out JD closing wheel. In soft tilled soil, the stock wheel might work fine, but in my no till soil that has not seen any tillage since 94, I suspect it would be an open slot disaster.
