Ashland County Ohio | Part of the problem we experinced with them besides high maintenence costs was the fact that the feed needed to be so dry and chopped fine for the bottom unloader to work halfway decent.Chopping it 50% or more dry matter there was a lot of leaf loss when doing alfalfa. That was the protein blowing away with the wind. The fine chop became a problem in modern dairy rations because we were getting away from feeding much long stem hay and we needed more fiber length. This was the same for any bottom unloading sealed silo. One year it was wet and was impossible to get the hay dried down enough to put in the silo so we chopped it and piled on the ground. It was the best haylage we had ever made.We built bunkers and and one silo is used for HMC and the other stores air. | |
