Curt, How many of these pictures do you have? They sure instantly bring back a lot of long forgotton memories to me and the quality is incredible. I found a couple old threshing pictures, but the quality is so bad I don't think I'll post them. Have you thought about contacting some company to make a calander from them? Or put them on a DVD to sell? I know I would sure buy one. It looks like you're not too far from me, but those guys could have sure been my neighbors 50 or 60 years ago. No seed corn caps in those days, I see a couple "railroad" caps, one cap with the "earflaps" that tied up on top. Both of those were common then. But what really brought back memories was the two guys with the felt hats. Nothing went to waste in those days, and when someone got a new dress hat (and nearly every man wore a hat in those days) they would wear the old one out as a work hat. My dad did that, and in the summer he would cut a couple holes in it to let some air in. Another thing I noticed were the "overall" jackets, and under them I would bet on most of them are "bib" overalls. I see one guy without overalls. Seems to me there was a dividing line sometime in the 1930s. Most everyone born before about 1935 or so wore bib overalls and guys after that (like me) wore jeans or pants like the one man in the picture has on. I can't help on the mechanical hoist, I'm old enough to remember them (70) but we never had anything so fancy as that. We didn't even have an elevator til 1956, my Dad thought people were getting pretty soft when they started getting aluminum scoops. I do remember a few farmers had the hoists though. When people started getting tractor loaders (farmhands) a lot of us rigged up a sling and lifted the front of the wagon with that. My, My, I didn't realize how old I was getting, thanks so much for sharing these pictures. |
