SW WI | My grandpa spent his last few days in a hospital bed. We talked a lot, about as much as I should have talked to him when he wasn't in the hospital. One of the stories I remember him telling me was when he bought his farm, back in late 40's, that his Pa helped him milk cows there the first night. When they got done his Pa looked at him and wished him the best then told him "for what land, cows, and crops cost now-a-days I sure don't know how you'll ever pay for it". It's never been easy, I think it's a lot easier than it was for my great grandpa, I have the Internet, and can speak English. If you want to start farming, START. Sell your lifted pick up, that $30k will go a long ways, cancel that winter cruise cause your going to want that time and money this spring. My first year of farming on my own I had 50 acres. Drove a planter for a custom guy for free to use his rig for mine after work. I split wood all summer for a guy to use his sprayer for my 50 acres and ran combine for a farmer all fall after work to get to use his combine. Bought cheap seed corn, it yielded well and bought other inputs from local co-op. I had talked to them the fall before and they let me make payment through the summer. Saved profit and reinvested it. Have done that now for 6 years. Never have been on a vacation, not even a honeymoon with wife. Owe a lot of money, I think, but have a farming operation I am proud of. If I have a good year this year I will be putting up a bin for corn and beans, with the bin jacks I bought 3 or 4 years ago. BTW, NAT approved or not, they'll be used. | |
