What kind of trees? I can't tell from the pictures but they almost look like pine trees? If they are pines it is pine wilt. The drought weakened them and then the disease got them. That is my guess. If they are red cedars check them for bag worms. They will work on the cedars pretty hard. Drought didn't help either way though.
