That looks very substantial but I would imagine it is also for a safety standpoint. Riding out back in the rear seat does place you at more risk in a rear end collision. 

However it is well designed utilizing 3 point and drawbar for mounting, safety bar around seat, nice steps and platform and seat belt as well as the large plate area under the SMV.
