As I have stated before I grew up listening to grandparents stories of the depression from their first hand experiences. They left a mark on me as well and taught me several valuable axioms for life.

Many never heeded those messages or lessons and now almost all those people with direct experience have left this world and that valuable resource is gone.

It's human nature for later generations to forget their past and act arrogant and smug feeling that they are somehow better or more advanced. These thoughts make them feel insulated to the events older generations went through. It also dooms them to have to re learn these painful lessons by direct first hand experience. When someone says it can never happen again you know the time is coming where it will.
