Subject: Re: Canola harvest question

Pleasant Hills, NSW Australia
We swath our canola so we can put gramoxone under the windrower for ryegrass control, but more and more people and direct heading it now. We use roundup or gramoxone over hear to knock it over, from what I hear roundup makes the plant a little doughy and possibly not as brittle straight away - but thats only an observation from 1 guy a talked to. I think your plan A is quite acceptable if you don't have 1000's of acres to cover or other crops to harvest at the same time. I would be worried about swathing on 30" rows, I've always had trouble picking up canola that was directly on the ground (as I'm imagining that the row would be on the ground because there's not enough stalks to keep it up and I could be way wrong about that if your stalks are 2" thick and 3ft high).Spraying over the top also helps burn down late germinating weeds making harvest more pleasant.
