Central Nebraska | I'm not trying to be rude here, but if you think ground will never have its irrigation taken away in this state, you better do some more research. If you are looking somewhere in the Republican River area, you really need to do some more research. Or look into the large farm near North Platte that was bought and turned back into grassland just so water could be sent elsewhere. Even in my area, where normally we are 5-15' to groundwater and only have 60-80' deep wells, they have tried to regulate our irrigation at least twice that I know of in my short time of farming. I see the day coming where the entire state is regulated on how much we can pump, whether it be 8", 10" or 12". One of my best friends is an agronomist in the McCook area, and he told me they are down to being able to put 9" of water on this year. FIL is farther west of McCook and might not be able to even use his quick response wells along the river, even though he has more than his full allocation available.
Again, I'm not trying to be rude, but I think this is why guys are telling you to be careful. I don't know what area you are looking at, but each one has its own unique challenges. I'd hate to see you get burned because you didn't take them all into account. Just because there are pivots on ground doesn't mean you will be able to use them. | |
