Mistakes we made: not having 12 ft alley by water fountains, not putting in enough post to protect gate hinges, door frames, and water fountains. Doing your homework before you build on how and where the gates will swing, and making sure water fountain drains go into the alley.

The old barn was 40+ years old and was a bad design and so was concrete. Cheap easy thing to do would be just put metal building over concrete. But as this might be the only time we build a new freestall barn for many years, just depends on the insurance. It would be nice to do it right, and with other barns out of the way, there is almost a blank slate, minus the parlor and lagoon.
