Northwest Iowa
If I remember correctly, your son just started dairying last year, so I would advise buying for next couple of years. Let him concentrate on the dairy production and let someone else worry about raising the hay. There are auctions weekly all around to find what he needs. Get the dairy up and running smoothly first, then look for those bottlenecks in his operation to focus on. The overhead he will need for a line of equipment will be hard to cash flow right now. The first 5-7 years are tough to cash flow, but he needs to maximize his return on investment, and doe's he have the extra time available to get all top quality hay put up and not have the cows suffer for lack of attention?
