Subject: question about drylotting cow/calf pairs

My BIL is out of a few pastures and is going to drylot some cows/calves this summer, we have some older hay he is going to use, 2-3 year old prarie hay and brome. he thinks he needs to grind it and feed it with silage, I think he will never be able to afford to feed silage with it to them and still break even. we will have some triticale bales that will be put up fresh this spring that would also be available. can anyone else that has run cattle in a drylot think of anything else that would be low cost, but also not drag the cows down on BCS?
