Subject: Re: The science of clay

Central Missouri
Joel on slide 38 it talks about the bulge. Below is a screenshot of a page from my counties soil survey. I have alot of crestmeade. 32A is the non eroded, I believe and 32B is the eroded. Looking at 32A and the permeability column the permeability in inches per hour goes from .6-2" down to .06-.2 when you hit 18-34 " and the clay content goes up to 42-60%. Is this what you mean by the "Bulge" shown in slide #38. If you notice, on the 32A crestmeade the clay content goes back down below 34" and the permeability increases.

If so,
1. What caused it? (just figured this out as it is explained through slide 48)
2. What can be done practically by farmers to mitigate it? (to get water air and roots to move through it or to get the excess clay to move on down)
